Endovascular Treatments

Endovascular treatments represent a major shift in how we manage complex cerebrovascular disorders, offering an inside-the-vessel approach that avoids a traditional craniotomy (opening the skull). Instead of accessing a vascular lesion from the outside, these advanced techniques allow a neurosurgeon to navigate the intricate circulatory network of the brain directly through the blood vessels. This approach relies on high-resolution, real-time fluoroscopic imaging (X-ray guidance) to guide specialized instruments to the precise location of the pathology.

At Helios Neurosurgery, we apply endovascular techniques with analytical precision and steady clinical command. The procedure begins with a tiny puncture, typically in the femoral artery in the groin or the radial artery in the wrist. Through this access point, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is carefully advanced under continuous imaging guidance up into the blood vessels of the neck and brain. Once the catheter is positioned at the site of the anomaly, specialized micro-catheters deliver highly targeted therapeutic devices.

For cerebral aneurysms, this may involve endovascular coiling, where soft platinum coils are deployed into the ballooned area to block blood flow and induce stable clotting, safely isolating the weak vessel wall from circulatory pressure. For more complex shapes, advanced flow-diverting stents can be placed across the parent artery to redirect blood flow away from the aneurysm entirely, allowing the vessel to heal from within.

For arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) or hypervascular tumors, endovascular embolization can deliver liquid embolic agents to safely close off the abnormal, high-pressure feeding vessels before definitive removal. By utilizing these internal pathways, we drastically reduce structural trauma, shorten hospital stays, and provide a clear, safer route to recovery.
